Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson has expressed her shock at the news that a Prison Officer has been murdered following a gun attack on the motorway between Lurgan and Portadown.
Mrs Dobson, who represents Upper Bann said:
“I share the shock and indeed anger felt by the local community that a man could be murdered whilst on his way to do a day’s work and my heart goes out to his family, friends and colleagues.
This was a despicable and cowardly attack and is a stark reminder of the awful times which the people of Northern Ireland desperately want to leave behind as we seek to build a peaceful and shared future.
There is no room for armed gangs in this society and the security forces must be given all the resources they require to ensure that all the people involved in this attack, including those who planned and organised it, are brought to justice and receive sentences which fit the crime.
If they will not let the rest of society live in peace then society must take steps to ensure they do not live among us.”
