Hussey condemns parcel bombers

Ulster Unionist MLA Ross Hussey has condemned those behind the two parcel bombs addressed to senior Police officers including the Chief Constable, which have been discovered in Royal Mail sorting offices.

The West Tyrone MLA, who represents his Party on the Policing Board, said

“Earlier this week we saw pipe bombs type devices thrown at Police patrols in Londonderry and Newtownabbey. This morning we have learned that two explosive devices have been intercepted in postal sorting offices, one addressed to the Chief Constable, the other to another senior officer.

Not only have the fanatics responsible sought to kill or injure the two recipients of these packages, but they have also endangered the lives of many Post Office employees, not least those at the Mallusk and Lisburn sorting offices.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that these people, although few in number and devoid of any real popular support, retain the capacity to inflict injury and disruption on wider society.

The Secretary of State must ensure that the Chief Constable has all the resources and support from other agencies – including MI5 and the NCA – which he requires to enable the PSNI to not only deal with the threat from this latest brand of republican violence, but to stamp it out, permanently.”
