Ulster Unionist Party MLA Mike Nesbitt has called on the Secretary of State, Rt Hon Karen Bradley MP, to act now on redress for victims of historical institutional abuse after it emerged that the Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service, David Sterling, has written to ask her to take the work forward.
Mike Nesbitt MLA said:
“I welcome the stance that David Sterling has taken on redress for victims of historical institutional abuse.
“It is now up to the Secretary of State to act. It has already been acknowledged by Mr Sterling that she has a moral responsibility to move on this issue. Victims and survivors waited a very long time for recognition of the abuse they suffered, it is totally abhorrent they are now being forced to wait to see redress.“It is not often a Cabinet Minister can stand up in the House of Commons with a proposal they know will get unanimous support from 649 other MPs. There has been enough can kicking over this, the Secretary of State needs to get on with it.”
