Andy Allen calls on Defence Minister to allow Veterans to access the new Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre

The East Belfast Ulster Unionist MLA, Andy Allen MBE, has called on the Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood MP, to review the current Ministry of Defence (MOD) policy and allow injured military Veterans to continue to access world-class treatment at Stanford Hall, post discharge from service.

Andy Allen MBE MLA said:

“I fully support the recent call by Help for Heroes for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to give Veterans access to the newly opened Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) at Stanford Hall in Nottinghamshire.

“It cannot be denied that our NHS does sterling work. However, I believe that the MOD policy that you become the concern of the NHS, service charities or others upon discharge, is wrong and should be reviewed.

“I strongly believe that the MOD’s duty of care and responsibility for Veterans should continue long after they have left the armed forces. Amending their policy in order to allow Veterans to continue to access world-class treatment at Stanford Hall post discharge from service, would be a step in the right direction by to MOD to ensuring they meet their duty of care for those who serve or have served. It would furthermore help to ensure those who have suffered injury as a result of service are given the lifelong treatment they deserve, without putting further strain on our NHS.

“As someone with first-hand experience of the level of care and treatment delivered at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC), Headley Court, I am confident that such a move would be well received by the service community who are increasingly feeling let down by the MOD.

“The current Defence Minister, Tobias Ellwood MP, is a former Army Officer and as a result should have a greater understanding of this issue than some of his predecessors. I have therefore written to him to ask him to take a personal interest in this issue with a view to amending the existing policy.”
