Ulster Unionist Peer Lord Empey has welcomed the passage of the bill to provide compensation payments for victims of Historical Institutional Abuse, and described it as long overdue good news for the victims.
Lord Empey said:
“The passage through Parliament of all stages of the HIA bill is a bit of very welcome - if long overdue - good news.
“This would not have happened without a big effort by members of both Houses of Parliament pressurising the government to provide the time. Without this effort the Bill would have fallen.
“I pay tribute to the steadfastness of the campaigners who have shown great resilience in the face of adversity.
“The hard work begins again when the details of the scheme are worked out, but today is still a good day for the victims of this abuse, albeit one they have regrettably been forced to wait a very long time for.”
