Ulster Unionist Sports spokesperson Robin Swann has sought clarification of the Sports Minister’s announcement of £3million funding for boxing.
North Antrim MLA Mr Swann said:
"The Minister has made an announcement of £3 million for boxing in Northern Ireland, and I would like the Minister to state if this is a new initiative or just the re-announcement of the £3.27 million of lottery funding identified for boxing and outlined to the Culture arts and Leisure Committee on the 26th June.
There is no doubt a need for the investment and the proposals presented to the Committee will address many of the management deficiencies in local boxing identified in the report presented to the Minister in 2011.
Northern Ireland still lacks a significant level of infrastructure to support our sports, and it is unfortunate that the opportunity to develop centres of excellence for sports like cycling and athletics was missed by the previous Minister. I look forward to the current Minister coming to the Committee early in the next term to outline her strategic investment plans to make the most of the legacy of interest generated by these fantastic games.
For all competitors from Northern Ireland still to compete at London 2012, I wish them all the best and I hope that OFMDFM have the foresight to organise a celebratory open top bus tour for all competitors from Northern Ireland whether they competed for Team GB&NI or Team Ireland. They have all done us proud.”
