Sinn Fein pull political stunt in South Belfast

David McNarryUlster Unionist MLA David McNarry has said that the last minute decision by Sinn Fein to withdraw Alex Maskey as its candidate for South Belfast is merely a cynical exercise and one that Unionism should not fall for.

"Let us be very clear here. This political stunt has everything to do with Fermanagh South Tyrone and in standing aside from a seat they cannot win in South Belfast they are attempting to bully Rodney Connor. This is a trap and one that Unionism should not fall for. Nevertheless their actions now leave an opportunity for Unionists to stand together and give us the opportunity to regain the seat which was held by the Ulster Unionist party until 2005."

"As a Unionist I want to see South Belfast represented by a Unionist Member of Parliament. I believe that in Paula Bradshaw - an excellent candidate with a proven track record of cross community work in the Village area - the Conservatives and Unionists are offering the electorate someone who is best placed to maximise the potential Unionist vote in the area. Therefore once again the UUP extend the invitation to the DUP to join our campaign with our Conservatives counterparts. "

"If elected, Paula will take her seat in the House of Commons with several hundred other Conservatives and Unionists from all corners of the United Kingdom. Surely there could be no greater demonstration of Unionist Unity than that from a Party who's Leader has openly stated that he will never be neutral on the Union"

"Paula Bradshaw IS the Unionist Unity candidate in South Belfast. The DUP have no female candidate standing in this election, and having stepped aside in North Down in favour of a female independent unionist, I am calling on them to step aside in South Belfast to enable the Unionist community to rally behind Paula Bradshaw."

"Paula has already shown political maturity and integrity by inviting Jimmy to join her campaign. It is time the DUP looked at the reality of the situation and backed the only candidate who can ensure that a Unionist candidate is returned at Westminster."

Is Budget Legal?

David McNarry MLA, Ulster Unionists Party Spokesperson for Finance and Personnel has questioned Sammy Wilson, Minister for Finance and Personnel, over concerns about the legality of the Northern Ireland Executive's budget.

"The Northern Ireland Act makes it clear that the Minister for Finance and Personnel has to lay before the Assembly a draft budget before the beginning of the new financial year. Sammy Wilson missed this date by some eight days, calling into question the legality of Northern Ireland's entire budget.

"Can anyone imagine the Chancellor of the Exchequer missing the deadline for the national budget? Sammy Wilson has mismanaged Northern Ireland's public finances and has put in jeopardy the stability of the Executive. Countless public services and local communities rely on a budget which has now been brought into legal question.

"The controversy surrounding the Budget is a direct result of the dysfunctionality of the Executive. It has been brought to my attention that the DUP and Sinn Fein attempted to bypass the Executive by pushing the budget through as an emergency procedure.

"Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness attempted to disregard their Executive colleagues by unilaterally approving Sammy Wilson's budget themselves; they did not want it to be debated at an Executive meeting.

"It has now come to light that using the emergency procedure was legally questionable. When it was finally brought before the Executive Sir Reg Empey and Michael McGimpsey voted against the revised spending plans. The arrogance and incompetence of the DUP and Sinn Fein is truly astonishing. If ever there was any evidence needed of the DUP/Sinn Fein carve-up at the heart of the Northern Ireland Executive, this is it. Northern Ireland's Executive is still completely dysfunctional.

"The DUP launched an entirely uncosted manifesto yesterday. It was another example, on a growing list of examples, of a fiscally irresponsible party more interested in themselves than the future of Northern Ireland or the Union. We simply cannot go on like this."
